Tolu’s Birthday Boudoir Session

Tolu came to my studio for her birthday with a wish to do something special just for herself. She had been feeling quite low and wanted to do something that would help her feel beautiful and rebuild a little of her confidence.

She had always wanted a boudoir session, and for her birthday she decided it was time.

She also wanted lots of flowers, so she arrived with an armful of beautiful ones. We played with them throughout the session, bringing them into the photographs in different ways. She had done her own hair, and I helped her a little with the final touches before we started.

My studio is filled with beautiful natural daylight, which was perfect for keeping everything soft and relaxed. Rather than giving Tolu lots of poses, I encouraged her simply to move, change position and follow her own body. I watched the light and captured those little moments as they happened.

It was a warm day, so after the studio part we also went into the garden for some photographs. It gave the session a completely different feeling, and I loved how naturally the whole story came together.

By the end of the session, Tolu was so happy. She had come in feeling low and unsure of herself, and seeing the photographs completely changed how she saw herself.

I remember looking through the images and thinking, we have to send these somewhere. I told her that I thought she was absolutely stunning and asked if she would be happy for me to submit some of the photographs to art magazines.

She said yes, and I am so glad we did.

Her photographs were selected by several art and photography publications, including Dehazed Magazine, where one of her portraits appeared on the cover. Other images were featured as some of the best photography works, and one portrait was later selected for an exhibition in London.

I gave Tolu that exhibition portrait as a birthday gift from me.

For me, this is what makes a session like this so special. We started with flowers, beautiful light and a birthday wish, but we finished with something much bigger: Tolu seeing herself the way I had seen her from the beginning.
